Drought, ice age and other thoughts

The recent drought, which isn't so recent as we have been in drought conditions for years, got me to thinking about history and I remembered I had read about the little ice age back in the 1300's.  Now I didn't learn about this at school I learned this on my own about 25 years ago.  So here is a link for info on the little ice age:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age  and here's another link:  http://www.eh-resources.org/timeline/timeline_lia.html

and here is some info on the Medieval warm period which happened before the little ice age:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_Warm_Period

Makes you kinda think doesn't it?  Although the scientists don't say whether there was widespread drought before the little ice age, they could have had a drought before it and history always repeats itself.

If you don't think this drought concerns you, think again.  Everything and I mean everything that you eat is going to go up in price as well as everything you buy because of the ethanol in the gas so it will cost more to ship things to you.  If you have a family or even if there is just you, please start buying more food NOW while the prices are reasonable.

Also if you only think this is happening to the US, think again because there is drought all over the world and who do you think they get most of their grain from?  hmmm?  Us and Russia and Russia has had a severe drought too.  The price of meat will go down because the farmers won't be able to buy food for their beef, chicken, pigs and fish because of the shortage so they will sell off the herds and us consumers will benefit for the short term.  Notice I said for the short term because as soon as all that meat is processed then there will be a shortage of meat and the price will skyrocket.  So if you have a freezer or can please do so for you and your family.  If you have dogs or cats, you should be buying canned food in bulk.  Anything you can buy in bulk buy and store.  It's better to have too much than not enough when times are bad.   Oh and if you think I made a mistake about the fish guess what, they feed soybeans to farm raised fish so there you go.  Grain isn't the be all and end all either.  Our ancestors didn't eat a quarter of the grain we do and their animals didn't either.  If you diversify your food sources, you will survive.  They knew it back then and we need to learn it now.

Sorry this has been such a depressing post.  I wouldn't have written it if I didn't care and I do.

Monsanto and Cargill messing with Mother Nature...Again

Well now they want to mess with the oceans, lakes and streams...
  • The soy industry, Monsanto, Cargill and other agribusiness giants are trying to position GM soy as a “sustainable” choice for aquaculture (farmed fish) feed
  • As soy is not a natural food found in the oceans, it poses serious risks of pollution, lack of nutrient content in seafood, and contamination of the oceans with herbicide-saturated GM soy
  • There is also concern about adding GM soy to yet another area of the food supply; it’s already ubiquitous in processed food and factory-farmed meat
  • By boycotting not only farmed fish but also GM soy, you’re taking a stand in support of natural, organic and independent community farms both on land and at sea

People are going to be dying from hunger in this country.  Taking all the nutrition from our food is NOT a good idea.  Shame on them for polluting our food chain and shame on us for buying what they're selling.

Bee article

Interesting article on bees
  • Earlier this year, the Illinois Department of Agriculture allegedly stole and destroyed a beekeeper’s hives and bees after inspectors claimed the hives had foulbrood, and that the beekeeper, Terrence Ingram, had failed to dispose of the hives as instructed. However, Ingram feels he could prove his hives did not suffer from the contagious disease, and that the Department acted without due process
  • Mr. Ingram suspects the destruction of his bees may be more related to his research on Monsanto’s Roundup and his documented evidence that Roundup kills bees
  • One of the forerunning theories of colony collapse disorder (CCD) is that it’s being caused by genetically engineered crops—either as a result of the crops themselves or the pesticides and herbicides applied on them, such as Monsanto’s Roundup
  • Ingram has studied the effects of Roundup on honeybees for the past 15 years, and believes he had acquired sufficient amounts of data to show that Roundup not only causes bee die-offs, but may be the cause of CCD

GM mosquitoes

Yep those darn scientists have done it again.  They are releasing GM mosquitoes in Florida.  They have had their genes modified so that they die off instead of reproducing.  The scientists are hoping that these GM ones will mate with the regular mosquitoes and it will make the population go way down.   Hmmm, do ya think that they werent really thinking here?  I know, I know that this will cut down on mosquito borne diseases but and here's a big BUT, what do you think is going to happen to all those birds and bats and such that eat mosquitoes...hmmm scientists?  Do you think that maybe you got brains but no common sense?  Just cause you can do something doesnt mean you should.  Your mommas should have slapped some sense into ya.  We'll be seeing some birds dying off big time from this fiasco just wait and see.  Maybe that's what is killing the birds now.  The experts are saying that it is mass bird suicide or trucks run into them and so on but what if it is the mosquitoes?  And who knows maybe they have other bugs they are working to become GM's and have already released them but havent told us poor fuddlebrained yokels about them because we just wouldnt understand.

I'm just shaking my head right now...
