Well a pair of socks anyway ;)  Finished these up and hubby couldn't wait to have them to wear...guess I'll have to do some more for him.

Yarn for life!

Here is a link to enter a contest through Fons and Porter's Love of Knitting magazine.  You can enter for free no obligation although they do ask for your email and address.  You (or me, please be me ;) could win yarn for life.  First prize is yarn for 20 years and second prize is yarn for a year.  Remember, yarn is a good insulation for your walls LOL.

I been knitting

Here is a little sweater I made myself.  It is a short one but I loved the pattern.  It was very easy.
I usually use a pin to close it (not the clothespin pictured LOL).

Here is a close up of the lace pattern:
The yarn was a wool/acrylic blend.  I think I might  do another one but lengthen it cause Lord knows I don't need to show off my butt ;)

Long time no see

Yep I'm back again.  I've been busy just doing day to day things.  I've been selling things on Ebay and getting rid of other things just to get ready for the cabin adventure.  I've been sewing a lot and knitting a lot too.  Here are some pics:

Some socks for me.

Thought I better start making some socks as ours are getting rather hard to mend anymore what with all the holes :)  Next on the needles are some socks for hubby.  I also have on the needles a sweater for hubby and another one for myself.  Yes I multitask LOL.

Don't know if you can see this but I wanted to show you how to piece batting on something you are quilting.  You line up the pieces and sew them together.

It's an excellent way to use up scrap batting for small wallhangings or table toppers.

This is the batting all sewed up and ready for my table topper.

And here's the top of the table topper.  I have since finished this.  Need to get a pic of the finished topper for you.  To make this topper you need 5" squares and 2 1/2" squares.  Place the smaller squares on opposite sides and sew from corner to corner (you can mark them on the back but I just winged it).  Cut off the excess triangles.  (Don't throw these triangles away.  I have an idea I'll share in a later post)  I squared them up to measure 5" and then tried out the placement on the table to see how they looked the best and then sew them together.  I used a 5" border. I used two packages of precuts for this and had plenty left over to make another one plus.  The squares I used weren't even from the same designer but I think they look great together.

On the home front, our chickens have started laying again.  Boy did we ever miss our home grown eggs.  We were getting them from an Amish farm but their eggs just didn't even compare to ours.  They keep their chickens penned up and ours have access to fresh grass - big taste difference!  We've been juicing and drinking our green juice every chance we get.  I give the pulp to the chickens.  They do not like carrots and their run is looking a little orange ;) but they do like the greens.  I even had some chard and parsley growing in the garden so pulled some chard leaves for the chickens and juiced some of them for us too.  I picked a little bit of the parsley (left some to grow) and dried it.  mmmm parsley potatoes mmmm.

I started some seeds and the plants are up and just waiting to get bigger and the weather to cooperate so I can plant them.  The weather today is pretty yucky.  It's turning colder and it's raining.  Last week we were over two inches above normal for the year.  Hope it keeps up and we have no drought this year.  I have to wait for a sunny day to hang my clothes out on the line so I did them yesterday since it was so beautiful out but the week before I had almost two weeks worth of laundry.  No fun doing that much laundry.  Took me all day.

Cabin News-  We burned a lot of brush and small twigs.  We pulled up some rotten tree stumps but need to take our saw with us next time so we can cut some of them out.  The wet weather does help with this kind of job.  It would have been so much harder if the ground would have been really dry.

I guess that catches you up on my life, how's yours been?

Crafty things going on...

Isn't this a wonderful quilt top.  No I didn't make it.  I got it on Ebay.  The seller did an excellent job.  I had to have it for the appliqued black kitties.  Most of it was paper pieced.  At least I think so because those little squares  inside the baskets I can't imagine trying to actually sew those without paper piecing them.  It will make a nice wall hanging I think.  I have it all ready to start quilting.  See the pins?

And just to show that I haven't been neglecting my knitting, here are some little projects I finished last week.  Two hats and one cowl.  When I went to the yarn tasting at the local yarn store, they gave us a couple of small skeins of yarn along with patterns to complete the cowl.  I got the other two skeins to do the hats and had enough to do two hats.  It was Cascade wool yarn and it was soooo soft.  Very nice to knit with.  All the yarn in the pic was double knitting weight.

Little update

GARDEN/HOUSE:
We finally got rain.  I could hear the plants and trees sighing, no actually I could, really.  The seeds we planted while waiting for rain all came up so looks like we might be having some cukes and beans after all.  DH has off this week and we are going to do some work around the house.  We want to finish the floors in the living room and two small bedrooms.  And we are going to tear out the carpeting in our bedroom and put down laminate in that room as well.  We also have to do all the closet floors.  Then DH is going to till the garden again and we are going to plant some more seeds for our fall garden.  We have never planted a fall garden so this is all new to us.  With the drought, there was one nice thing.  Not very many bugs.  But then there weren't very many plants either LOL.

I have been getting a lot of little peppers and tomatoes off the garden.  I have been freezing them until I have enough to can up some sketti sauce.  I found a recipe for hot sauce I want to try since the peppers that survived are all hot ones.

KITCHEN:
I actually canned some plum preserves the other day.  DH saw them and decided to buy them.  We brought them home, he tasted one and said they are sour and hard as a rock.  Yep he was right they are sour and hard as rocks.  After spending a couple of hours pitting and chopping them up, I told him do not EVER get these again.  My fingers were sore until the next day.  But and here's the thing, they made wonderful preserves.  I had to taste test them before they were canned LOL.  I put them in the slow cooker and let them go on high for about four hours.  That softened them up.  I still didn't use all of them either so I was thinking maybe I could put them with another fruit (blueberries or boysenberries since I have lots in the freezer) and make some jam.  Has anyone done this before?  I think they are Damson plums but I'm not sure.

I got some green peppers from the Amish last week and cut those up and put them in the freezer so I can make my grandma's pepper relish since we are on the last jar of that.  When I make up a batch it usually lasts a couple of years.  At this rate I won't have to make up any relish or jellies/jams/preserves for at least 2-3 years.

I also have all those potatoes I got from the garden.  I'm thinking of canning most of those up.  I had canned some store bought potatoes in the fall and those were real handy to make some hashbrowns for breakfast.  I also have a bunch of hamburger I want to can up too.  I don't want to wait until we loose electricity and then say I should have canned it up.

CHICKENS:
The girls are doing fine.  We had been giving them watermelon and had a fan on them during the heatwave.  Maybe we were giving them a little too much watermelon cause they kind of got the squirts, poor things.  We have two that we are going to have to clean their butts up.  This is something that we always look forward to...next flock we get will be handled more cause chasing chickens is not a lot of fun.

CATS:
The cats are doing great except Roxy who seems to be feeling his age lately.  Penny is loving the outdoors and in all that heat she wanted to go out but she wouldn't come in when you called.  Crazy girl!  And she crawls under the door to the chickens fenced in area and stays with them.  I don't know maybe they have a girl get together :)  Tikki has been his lazy self but has been jumping up on the bed after DH leaves in the morning so I can make a fuss over him.

QUILTING:
I worked on a small quilt and got most of the quilting done on it.  I just have to bind it and it will be done.  I also started quilting on another one and almost have that done except the binding.  I knitted up a little pair of footies for me.  I only had one little ball of yarn in this particular colorway and thought I would try to make a pair.  I even had a little bit left over.  The ball only had about 200 yards in it which isn't quite enough to make a decent pair of socks.  I have a couple of more 200 yard balls in my stash so I think I will be making some more.

READING:
Right now I'm reading Uncle Tom's Cabin.  It's not bad and really interesting that it was written before the Civil War.  If you haven't read it, it's about slavery.  Some parts kind of slow down the narrative but when you think that the author actually lived during this time and saw these things going on it really makes you think.  I have a lot more to read after I get done with this one.  I checked my Kindle and I have 7 pages of books on there.  Each page is 10 books so that's 70 I have to read.  Like I don't have other things that have to get done...

NEW PLACE:
We called around to see how much it would be to put in a water well.  The two places we called it was going to be over $6000.  Crazy.  Of course, it was just a guesstimate because they really don't know how far down they have to drill but that price was the minimum.  We have a couple more places to call.  Hopefully we can find someone more reasonable.  We have decided to get a little cabin.  We looked at a few and really liked them.  DH is saying now maybe we should have bought a piece of land with a house and well already on it.  I could say I told him so but I won't ;)  He thought it would be cheaper to get a piece of property and put a cabin on it...ummm NO.  We went to Marvin's (a building supply store) today to look around.  And we kept saying we need one of those and a few of those and....you get the picture.  This cabin is just the shell.  If we have extra windows we want to be put in they will put them in for $50 extra but we have to buy the windows.  Marvin's has excellent prices but I told DH that we should check at Home Depot and Lowe's because they have returns and scratched and dented things that they put on sale.  Now of course I know that windows and doors can't be too dented.  You have to be able to open and close them but a few cosmetic scratches doesn't hurt the operation of them and I have seen some pretty good deals before in those stores.  Oh and the well situation, we asked about whether they douse (you know when someone goes around with a stick or two metal rods and locates water) and the one driller just laughed.  Hey if someone can find water and there is less ground to drill through I think we might try it.  Jeez Louise we all aren't made of money.  Anyway I remembered that one of my books in the Foxfire set had something about wells in it so I looked and yes in volume #4 there is all about dowsing and well digging.  So DH and I decided that we will try to douse.  We're not going to dig however.  That can be dangerous.  Wish us luck!  I'll let you know what we find if  anything.

Well I think I caught you up on everything for now.  I hope to get some pics up soon.

Talk to ya later!

Been away from the blog for a while...

To update everyone on how much I've been doing...and how exciting my life is...

The chickens are laying again...a lot.  I have several dozen eggs in the fridge.  We eat eggs almost every day for breakfast and I even made some egg salad the other day for lunch.  I really don't want to eat them for supper too, really I don't.

We planted cabbages, peas, lettuce, basil, potatoes in the garden.  I guess too early cause guess what, we're getting a freeze tonight and tomorrow night...hmmm hope we don't lose the blueberries and grapes.  I wanted to cover them tonight but hubby said they should be OK since it's a light freeze so he can't blame me if they freeze and all the berries drop off.

Dad and mom called yesterday to let me know that they had to rush to the hospital cause mom was having chest pains at 1 a.m.  Turns out she has a hiatal hernia and not having a heart attack.

We close on some new property we are buying tomorrow.  5 acres of land in Tennessee!  No house on it but we are planning on building one or getting a trailer (I don't like trailers, been there, done that and don't want to do it again :)  Hubby was thinking we might just build a pole building and then do the inside like we want but he wants to have a garage door...what?  Anyway he says then it will be easier to move in the furniture and appliances.  Guess  you can't argue with that logic huh?

My brother is moving to New York.  Dad and mom finally got him on the phone, hadn't heard from him for over two weeks.  I had left a message a couple of days after he had called me drunk.  He's an alcoholic and fell off the wagon again.  Glad he's OK.  Wish he would get his act together.

Our geriatric cat is on his last legs I'm afraid.  He's dragging his back leg and peed on our bed the other day.      I couldn't yell at him or anything, he's so old.  If he gets any worse, we'll probably have to take him to be put to sleep.  As long as he's eating and drinking, we'll keep him and love on him as long as possible.  Had to give him a bath tonight though he stunk so bad (all the peeing I think).  He's good about going to the litter box usually though.  I have shut him out of the bedroom.  I had the devil of a time getting the top pillow top clean (we have an air bed) and the top zips off.  It is so bulky and barely fits in the washer.  I put it outside to dry.

Hubby has been sick  but won't go to the doctor until after we sign the papers for the land.  I'm calling the doc to make an appointment when he's outside tomorrow...sneaky huh?

I got one cross stitched picture done.  I need to take some pics of it.  It's a fruit label and I'm making quite a few others to go with it.  I think I will make a quilted hanging out of them.  I'm still working on several sweaters and a pair of socks as well.  I get bored with one project and go to another one.

Well that's all I can think of for now.  Hope you had a very nice Easter!

Sock pics

These two pair I made for DH.  The pair on the right have aloe in them.  So soft to knit with.  He's already worn these pairs several times.

This is a pair I made for me.  I havent worn them yet but they are fairly thick and should be really warm this winter.

And this is the pair that I just finished for him.  He really likes wild colors and I think these are pretty wildly colored.  He hasnt worn them yet but its only a matter of time...

I started another pair for him and am working on another pair for me.  That will be all the socks I knit this summer, too much canning and other things to do like warping my loom for the first time.

And what would a post be without a gratuitous picture of the chickens huh?  Here it is.  The tarp is keeping them in the shade and as soon as I come out of the house they're looking for food...silly chickens it's not time yet for your watermelon or spinach.  They still have their old run attached to this one so they have plenty of room, enough room in fact to have the grass growing in the run and they seem happy enough.  When it rains I have to run out and take down that tarp and if it gets too windy it's not up since the sound of it flapping scares them.  Although you cant see it behind the coop is a fan to keep them cooler under the coop.  Like I said they are spoiled.

Everyday things

I know I dont post much but I think I do just very mundane things and dont want to bore you to death. But here goes:

On Tuesday we went and got two big baskets of locally grown peaches from Scott's Orchard. We got some lumber to build a grape harbor. Our grapes are so loaded this year that they are laying on the ground. We do have two small metal trellaces but they are now too small to hold all the branches. I harvested the rest of my small batch of beets. Now that I know that they will do well here I'll be planting more this fall. My popcorn didnt come up...darn. My sunflowers looked like they wouldnt come up either but with the rain everyday one finally poked its head up, well at least that's what I think it is. I will be very disappointed if it turns out that it's a weed instead...LOL. The rain has greened everything up and the garden is doing pretty good. I even got one small paste tomato today. It is from a volunteer that came up near the raspberries. I've been picking about 1/2 to 1 quart of blueberries every day. I'll be making some syrup, butter and jam out of it and I'll still have enough left over to make some blueberry pancakes.

The chickens are laying well, sometimes too well I must say. I will be making some more pickled eggs only this time with beet juice. The fence around the chicken coop needs shored up or something. We need to take a day and fix it but my DH has been so sick since Tuesday. Some intestinal bug. He even called off work two days. Poor thing.

Last night I canned some peach preserves and am planning on doing some more tonight. We went to get some oil and oil filters for the car and truck yesterday, ate at Mildred's Restaurant (buffet was really yummy) and after DH visited the bathroom stopped at the fruit market on the way home. Gotta keep those chicks in watermelon ;) In case you think this was my idea, think again, DH needed to get the oil before the sale ran out so even though he wasnt feeling well we went and got it. He had a coupon. We went to the wrong store. He noticed this when we were at the cash register and mentioned that we had come to the wrong store and he had a coupon for the other store. The manager honored the coupon! So we got $10 off our purchase. DH was happy about being able to use the coupon and we didnt have to stop anywhere else which was good considering.

I finished one pair of socks for him and started another for him. Havent been doing much crafting, been reading instead.

Knit alert!

Yes I finally finished the skirt that I started knitting in the summer.  The waistband was kind of freaking me out but it turned out pretty nice.  In my journey to use up old stuff, I used an old waistband from some worn out underwear (shh dont tell).  The underwear I cut up for rags and I am really hating to throw out something useful and the waistbands were not in bad shape, still stretchy so I used one of them for the skirt.  The skirt itself was a really dull knit after all the interesting bells and lace at the bottom - just straight knitting up to the waistband.  I inserted the elastic and sewed the top down about an inch for the elastic casing.  Cant wait until it gets warm enough to wear it.I have some other knit things going on and will post them as I complete them...

Finished knitted items...

My new cardigan I completed.  Loved the yarn.  It is RY Luxury Cotton DK 50% cotton, 45% viscose and 5% silk #263 which is a beigey brown.  So soft and I loved the pattern as well.  It has decreases along the front cable to define the waist.  I used two different sized buttons because when I went to the dreaded Wal-Mart I picked up three cards with one being smaller than the other two so decided to see if I had any buttons in my stash that would work better for the smaller ones and I did!  They are clear glass and are a little bit bigger than the others but they work and I like it so that's all that matters ;)  Oh and the pattern came from an old Creative Knitting Mag.

This is a tank top.  I had some yarn (Cascade Yarns Rio 75.9% cotton, 24.1% viscose in color #244) and couldnt find a decent pattern so I just made the pattern up.  I have the pattern written down and will put it up on the blog here in a few weeks after I write it out from my short hand...lol.  The yarn was a worsted weight and much prettier in person.

A little lacy vest done in Jo Sharp's Alpaca Silk Georgette 40% Alpaca, 40% Merino and 20% Silk in #755 Musk.  Now this pattern was a little strange as the lace pattern is not only on the front but on the back as well.  The pattern is from Nashua Handknits Seashore Spring and Summer 2007 book.   All the yarn above came from the WEBS yarn site.

Here is a pic of my new basket I ordered from Southern Plate.  It is commemorating their 2nd anniversary and has dividers in it for your silverwareand plates in the back.  It's an American Traditions hard maple basket made in Ohio and they use vegetable dyes.  They are really well made and were a lot cheaper than Longerberger baskets which if you have any of those you know what I am talking about.

Will post more later!

Quilting - My material

This is the fabric I chose.  What do you think?  Very retro.  The brown with pink polka dots reminds me of a dress I had when I was little only the polka dots were the size of a silver dollar.  One of my favorite dresses.  Next to sew them together in nine patches blocks.

These are some Tawashis that I knitted up. I plan on making some more.  Havent tried to use one yet but I will..oh yes I will...

Just wanted to let you see what I have to put up with every day.  This is Penny.  See Penny get comfortable between me and the keyboard...Sleep Penny, sleep.  She got disgusted after I took her picture and left.  LOL.  :)  She'll be back.

And more pics!

I'm not going to get off you get off....
And of course we need a pic of Penny.  She's my helper cant you tell ;)
This is a sweater I just completed sorry for the blurry pic
Better pic but not so good with the color it is more of a stormy sea (blue, green, gray) color and even though I made a size smaller than I usually wear it is too big but comfortable.  This is a wool/angora mix hand dyed I got off of Ebay.  Gorgeous yarn.

I am a terrible, terrible person.  Please beat me with wet noodles.  I cannot believe it has been so long since I posted anything.  It's not that anything exciting has happened but I should be posting more often.  I just wanted to say Happy T-Day to everyone.  I am very thankful to have a roof over my head, food on the table, a loving husband.  But I am most thankful for still having my mind cause you know you can lose it very easily :)

I have been busy with work.  They finally found me someone to back me up when I am off.  Well they actually found a few people to type the one Indian doc I do but unfortunately all four of them quit...so they decided to send out my other doc and that has gone along quite well actually.  The Indian doc is going to be out the same two weeks I am taking off and no she isnt taking me with her although I did joke about it to my co-worker.  Yes we are so close she is taking me to India!  lol.

We got our fence up and my peas are growing so big.  We are supposed to get a frost so I will have to cover them so they make it.  The raspberries finally gave up the ghost and the final berries were picked on the weekend.   I need to cut them back now.  DH burned the other branches last week.  I went out to help him and ended up smelling like smoke for the rest of the day yuck.

My secret sister was finally revealed and now I am participating in the Christmas secret sister.  If anyone is interested in joining in just go to MaryJane's Farm and sign up.  I had a wonderful time finding goodies and sending them out for my secret sister.  There are all kinds of things on her site and lots of info on just about anything you can imagine.

I signed up for the Lord of the Rings Sock Club again for this next year.  This was my Christmas present to myself.  I belonged to it this year and the yarn and patterns were excellent.   Now if I could only find more time to knit.  Too bad I need to work!

I hope all of you have a very wonderful Thanksgiving this year.

Talk to you soon,

Denise

Rainy Saturday here

It just poured for about 2 hours here today. Luckily I went to the market and got some groceries. They were having a really good sale on bananas and meat. What a combination. The checkout girl was probably wondering what the...? Anyway I went early enough to beat the crowds and got back before it started to rain. DH and I ordered some more plants for the garden tonight. So we will have something to do on DH's day off in 9 days. Nine days straight...yuck. He will be such a happy person the whole time as well. ;)

I have been working on a pair of socks and will get them done this week, cross my fingers. I will be able to post a pic of them soon! I have so many UFO's I'll be 100 yrs old before I complete them all...lol.

Well that's all for now kind of short I know but I must go kill Tikki...not really but if I dont do it DH will. Tikki is sooooo quiet during the day snoozing on my chair...then around 10 pm he starts..Singing not good singing just short aggravating high pitched sounds that are not at any regular interval which is real nice when you are trying to sleep. Trying is the key word. I have tried to feed him, make a big fuss over him, play with him but nothing works. I think he thinks because he's up everyone should be up including the other cats. He wakes up Molly who because he's 19 yrs old only thinks about eating and sleeping so you wake him up he thinks it is time to eat. Then Molly gets into the act by jumping up on the bed and licking your arms. Our other two cats are really quiet and dont get into the act at all. Anyway now Tikki has stopped. He will wait about half an hour after I go to bed to start up again. Pets arent they wonderful ;)

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Write to ya later!

Friday, February 27, 2009

Well I'm back again! Miss me? course ya did! Yesterday I went out for lunch with some of my buds. We went to a Greek restaurant and it was very good food and the company was wonderful. We are going to try to get together in March again.

After lunch I went with my friend Kathy to get some baby clothes at consignment yard sale type thingy. They had anything you might need for babies and toddlers. I helped her pick out some great clothes for her grandbaby. I have posted a picture before of Megan on here see below. It was fun looking at all the little bitty clothes and was especially great since I wasn't spending any of my money to do it :) lol.

After we were done Kathy dropped me off at my car and on the way home I stopped at Big Lots. They had some Looza juice so I got some of that. You never know what you are going to find when you go in.

I have taken some new photos. I think I am finally getting the hang of the digital camera although you have to forgive some of the pics as we are having overcast weather here. Today it has been raining. I went down to get the mail and pick up my morning paper and yes the paper was soaked again. The plastic they have covering it always seems to leak. Anyway here are some pics.

The first one is of an African violet I got for cheap at Home Depot. It is different from my other one that I have. Can't have too many plants. Well maybe if there is nowhere to sit or stand you should back off on the plants but other than that...

The next two are of our seedlings. These have gotten big enough to be out of the little domed house they were in and be put out on the windowsill in our kitchen. We just got another set of seed pellets so another 72 seedlings!

Here are two pics of a little beaded purse I did some time ago. As you can see it needs finished with a lining and a cord handle. It is beaded with delicas.

Here is a pic of the socks I did for myself. These were the first pair of lacy ones I did. The picture isn't true to the colors though sorry about that. They are blue, gray and white Opal. They have been very long wearing and although I wasnt too crazy about the color after I was finished I just love them. They go with a lot of different colors.

This is a pair I started for myself but found the pattern did not stretch enough for my fat ankles :( so my husband said that he would wear them. He has such little chicken legs...lol and loves bright colors. I need to get a pic on here of him wearing the hat I made him. He even went to the yarn store and picked out the colors.

These are some of his purple socks. They are very soft.

These are his blue multi-striped ones.

And these are the austermann ones that I call his autumn socks. Love those fall colors.

And this is the last photo for today. This is a little MP3 player sock I made out of some sock remnants. It is a very soft blue varigated. It even has a little pocket for the earphones. I need to put a cord on it but it works quite well protecting it and the cords from curious kitties.

Well that's all for now hope to have more later this next week to talk about.

Sunny day today!

Yes I really need to start doing this more often. Life just seems to be getting in the way though. ;0) Since this blog is supposed to have knitting on it, here is a pic of some socks I finished a while back. They were made with leftovers that I purchased on Ebay. Nothing fancy just plain socks. I made them over a year or two ago and they are holding up really well. The bottom part is Austermann step but I'm not really sure what the top is.

I will try to take pics of the other things I have made now that I have figured out my camera working with Vista.

On the 2nd of February I took these pics...

This is our spinach garden, lol. I just wanted everyone to see it does actually snow here. This is our accumulation which lasted oh about a couple of hours before the sun melted it.

This is a pic outside my backdoor. See the snow? wooohooo! Good thing I dont have to drive to work huh? Course everyone was at the grocery store the night before this big storm getting bread and milk. You think I'm kidding but I'm totally serious.
Well all for now here in Alabama.
